Self-portrait at age 25.

Ingres (1780 – 1867) was a French Neoclassical painter. Although he considered himself to be a painter of history in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Jacques-Louis David, by the end of his life it was Ingres's portraits, both painted and drawn, that were recognized as his greatest legacy.

A man profoundly respectful of the past, he assumed the role of a guardian of academic orthodoxy against the ascendant Romantic style represented by his nemesis Eugène Delacroix. His exemplars, he once explained, were "the great masters which flourished in that century of glorious memory when Raphael set the eternal and incontestable bounds of the sublime in art ... I am thus a conservator of good doctrine, and not an innovator." Nevertheless, modern opinion has tended to regard Ingres and the other Neoclassicists of his era as embodying the Romantic spirit of his time, while his expressive distortions of form and space make him an important precursor of modern art.

...and I think, quite a toothsome fellow.

My friends and I had the misfortune of watching the New Moon preview yesterday (because 2012 was sold out). I admit I was looking for something to laugh at, and I'll admit there was enough to make this marginally more entertaining than Twilight, which was almost as torturous as Eragon (I say almost because the soundtrack distracted me - Muse!).

I had a question while watching the show which I thought I'd share with you guys. In the scene where Bella and Edward "The Corpse" Cullen are in Italy, the head vampire guy is very fascinated by the fact that The Corpse can read everybody's mind except Bella's, so he tries to read her mind, and fails. And then another vampire tries to do the same, and fails (Dakota Fanning's character, who got to do to Edward what I wish I could - slam him about like a rag doll with her mind).

What I found interesting was when the head vampire, realising he failed to read Bella's mind, said: "Interesting. I see nothing."

Cos I thought, is he a soul-reader or a mind-reader? I've never read the novels so I'm not sure. If he can't read her mind, doesn't that suggest she really doesn't have a brain? I mean, her actions don't prove otherwise...

What do you think?

Thanks for stopping by for #35, Stacey and the Mystery of Stoneybrook, my first BSC snark and the only reason I created a LJ account! I was unaware of the existence of this until I had a look at a list to see how many BSC books I’d read and found that it’s a bit of a rarity, unsnarked anywhere, and according to someone on Amazon a ‘lost’ BSC book. It’s also appalling.

The guys at Roosterteeth responsible for the RVB series, Supreme Surrender and a series of brilliant short comedies (or rather the World's Greatest Extra Joel Heyman) have decided to tackle the idea of dating vampires in their latest comics in celebration of the recent Twilight Obsession due to the release of the new movie. Either that or jumping onto the Twilight bashing bandwagon, anyway enjoy. Question is how successful will Joel be? If I were a girl I'd rather Joel then a 100 year old, sparkly vegetarian vampire who keeps on repeating school

Good People,

I have two gerbils, Madge and Nebudchadnezzar. I should say, I HAD two gerbils. After enjoying good health for their entire lives, I discovered them both this morning at death's door. No idea what happened, considering even just yesterday, they were fine. Whatever it is they had, they must have given it to each other. Madge passed away earlier this evening and Nebs is barely breathing. Naturally, this would happen ON Thanksgiving, when all of the vets in the area are closed and the emergency vet place doesn't take "pocket pets."

I've had terrible luck with gerbils in the last year or so, so much so that I'm considering never getting any again. I feel as though I'm an awful "mother", even though I do everything I need to do in order to ensure good health.

I'm very sad. My animals are my babies:( I've never seen animals deteriorate so quickly in such a short period of time:(

Anyhoo, that's all I have for now:(

I’d really hate to see this place die, because it's one of the few art snark communities on Livejournal where people don't act like the act of posting and snarking is “sooper srs bsns“ or something. Anyways, on to the bad art!

Remember that big oil spill a few years back? It must've mutated these poor otters. What's going on with their limbs?

"It's been ten years and Carl (dad) hasn't aged a day. People are starting to notice."
Edward Cullen, New Moon

Pray tell, Edward, how would people bother to wonder about your father while a teenage person like yourself (with exceptional facial figures) changes due to growth spurt? More importantly, it is more suspicious of a teen re-attending high school constantly (with A-mark grades and an impressive record, by the way). Why would they notice your father and not notice you?

It's funnier when the movie ends--the Cullens return as if nothing happened just a moment later.

Plot hole...A gaping plot hole...

Where can I find thin hedges, about the height of the shortest base game hedge (just that hedge cut in half or thirds would be perfection, for example)? I am currently in a crazy regency phase and have a burning desire to make lavish Victorian gardens, so I need something to make fancy hedge designs. I have completely gone through both plant sections, and the fencing section at MTS, and have browsed TSR after being linked there by a friend. I have found several nice hedges, but they are all far too wide. A half-height fence made to look like a hedge would be ideal. Much easier to make the twists and turns necessary for the designs, but really I will take any thin hedge at this point (or perhaps premade hedge designs? though that is probably wishful thinking on my part). Thank you in advance!

My dad's middle name is Carl so when a telemarketer went to say his name on our answering machine it said something like this:

"This is a message for John The One Hundredth Smith"

I'm pretty sure that they interpreted C as hundred.

It was a cute little house that I downloaded about the same time sims 3 was released. Unfortunately I never saved it. And I'm having trouble trying to find a house I really liked.

It's a small house, I think it had one or two bedrooms. Two floors, a small kitchen that had a breakfast bar on the side, a dining room, bathroom on the main level and the living area. I think I remember the layout *slightly*

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks so much in advance.

Just a quick update to let everyone know I am working through the list of volunteers. I am trying to get a feel for each person by reading their journal. However, the majority are friends-locked. So, those of you who volunteered, could you please temporarily add me as a friend?

I promise I am discreet and do not have the time to read every entry you've ever made. I just need to be able to read more than "This journal is friends-only".

Also, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the U.S.! And Happy Thursday to everyone else!
